Neuromancer
The première, genre defining cyberpunk novel comes to Apple TV
Back in 1984… relative unknown author… William Gibson published what would become the defining cyberpunk novel of the 20th century… book one in the “Sprawl Trilogy” …Neuromancer. Set in a near-future dystopia, the story follows a computer hacker enlisted into a crew by a powerful artificial intelligence to complete a high-stakes cyber-heist. Synopsis from Wikipedia…
Case is a low-level hustler in the underworld of Chiba City, Japan. Once a talented computer hacker and console cowboy, Case was caught stealing from his employer, who retaliated by damaging Case’s central nervous system, leaving him unable to use a neural link to cyberspace. Case is approached by Molly, an augmented “razorgirl” and mercenary street soldier working for a shadowy US ex-military officer named Armitage. Armitage offers to cure Case in exchange for his services as a hacker.
Dark, dystopian landscapes and groundbreaking noir-infused cyberpunk escapades ensue…
Now Apple TV has taken on the ambitious task of bringing Neuromancer to the streaming universe. The epic cyberpunk tale that has been called unfilmable has finally come to pass. Find below the official trailer put out by Apple TV…
Those of you familiar with my work, know that Neuromancer holds a special place within the Tek-Gnostics mythology. In my recent book… Brave Noö World - A Guerilla Ethnography of High Strangeness… Gibson’s Neuromancer figures prominently as analogy to today’s dystopian grim realities…
From Brave Noö World…
Speaking of grim reality, the science fiction sub-genre: Cyberpunk makes recurring appearances throughout this work. Cyberpunk’s dystopian themes of gritty cityscapes, climate collapse, unbridled corporatocracy and unleashed AI, have proven especially prophetic in today’s dystopian reality.
Everything I know about cyberspace, I learned from one of the founding fathers of the cyberpunk genre, science fiction author William Gibson. “The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.” So the opening line of Gibson’s classic 1984 cyberpunk novel… Neuromancer… so eloquently sets the stage. This one line defines the gritty, cyberpunk ethos.
The conceptual underpinning of cyberspace was elegantly laid out in Gibson’s Sprawl Trilogy and Bridge Trilogy collection of Sci Fi novels. In 1980s world culture, these series of novels, not only laid out cyberpunk as a genre, they foresaw the coming immersive impact of the internet, conceptualized as the virtual realm of cyberspace.
The upcoming streaming series was created by Graham Roland and J. D. Dillard for Apple TV. The long-awaited series strives to measure up as an adaptation of William Gibson’s 1984 novel (with Gibson himself serving as executive producer, with Roland serving as the showrunner and Dillard as the director the first three episodes. It stars Callum Turner and Briana Middleton. The series consists of ten episodes and is set to premiere on January 22, 2027.
Time will tell if the team at Apple TV can live up to Gibson’s brilliant vision of our Brave Noö Dystopia… one can only hope. Rest assured that your author will be watching the series with a critical eye. Stay tuned…
